About Us
►Where we are from:
My name is Michelle and I am the founder/owner of Pegasus Handmade Soaps. We are in the northern VA (near DC) We are about 30 minutes west of DC.
I have been selling my bath products for more than 3 yrs now. When I first started making soap, I was using melt and pour soap base which was so much fun but then I wanted to challenge myself and make my soaps from scratch which required a lot of research, reading and the patience. Making soaps from scratch was hard to catch on to because I had to learn to develop my own style of soaps. I wanted them to be different and unique. I am not one for being creative so I just tried to keep it simple and less fancy. After all, its whats in the soaps is whats important then how it really looks.
I have to say that I was not thrilled about using lye to make soaps but in order to make REAL homemade soap, I had to put my fears aside and just try it. I was so please after the first batch came out perfect with no flaws. I now had the confidence to continue. Gosh I am so glad I did and now look at me now. I really love using soaps made from scratch because my skin feels so much better and looks so much better since I started using them.
I don't know why soap gets such a bad wrap. I think its because of the soap we buy in the stores that leaves your skin so dry. tight and itchy. Well homemade soap is NOT the same as store bought soap. Why? Store bought soaps are not really soap but detergent bars. Real soap takes time to cure for weeks before it can be used and the oils that are in REAL soap. The process is so much different and people need to know the difference. If you only try homemade soap just once, you will know why it is different. Seeing is believing.
When you are new to this kind of market, it is a real challenge especially when there are so many soap makers now. You really have to market yourself and have unique items. It was very hard at first to establish a customer base when so many people have already decided where to buy their bath and body goods from.
►Why My Products?
I wasn't willing to spend 6-7.00 for a bar of soap, then neither should the customers. I think of myself first as to what I would be willing to spend. Granted although my products are handmade from scratch, you shouldn't expect to pay Walmart prices for them either as I spend a lot of time making these products not only for myself but for others to enjoy. There is a lot of time that goes into every single item I make from the packaging, materials, labels etc. I am a one woman show that does everything per order. I take the time to do everything right before it leaves my hands the best I can. And yes at times I do make mistakes, but I am human after all. :-)
►We do use preservatives in some of our products at the time of order. Why? Some of our products require water in them and to avoid mold and bacteria from growing over a short period of time, a preservative is needed. This in no way will affect the quality of the products. We do not add any preservatives in any of our soaps. They are made just what the ingredients that are listed.
If no preservative is in a certain products, the shelf life is usually 2-3 months depending on how it is stored, where as others may be longer.
I spend so much time in my kitchen creating recipes, experimenting and a lot of times, recipes that did not turn out the way I wanted and I wind up throwing a lot of stuff out, which can get a bit costly. At times I stay up all hours of the night thinking and writing down recipes.
Service and good quality products is number 1 and I take it very seriously. And I am glad to give the service to you along with great homemade products. I have had such great customers over the years and so pleased to provide them with great bath and body products.
